Please pause to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice

As the Director of the Wilmington Veterans Affairs Medical Center it is my honor to serve my fellow Veterans every day, but on Memorial Day it is my responsibility to remember and honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their country and freedom.

As a nation, we have learned that freedom isn’t free. It is earned by the blood and sweat and far too often, the lives of the service members who have sworn to protect it.

Sadly, Memorial Day is usually looked upon as the unofficial start of summer or a nice long weekend, and its true meaning is often over looked.

I ask each of you to not forget and to pay tribute to the service members and their families who have sacrificed so much in defense of this great nation.

Please pause during your cookouts and family gatherings to remember those who will never have the opportunity to enjoy those pursuits again.

For those who are called to do more, we would welcome you as volunteers at the VA Medical Center or one of our Community Based Outpatient Clinics where we honor the service and sacrifice of our service members every day.

For more information or to Volunteer please contact Pat Caldwell at 302-994-2511, ext. 4545.
