Integration of Syrian refugees: Fundamental security concerns

On behalf of 12 Northeastern state police associations representing more than 20,000 active and retired troopers, the Northeast Regional Troopers Coalition (NERTC) commends and supports bipartisan efforts to pause the federal government’s approval of Syrian immigrants into the United States.

State police officers vow to protect and serve every citizen, as well as those individuals striving to become part of the fabric of our great country.

However, this is a time to evaluate the circumstances and efficacy of allowing integration of Syrian refugees into the United States. There are fundamental security concerns by our front-line law enforcement officers in our ability to assure the American public that integration will be effectuated with guaranteed public safety.

At this time we are not aware of, nor have we been assured, that federal authorities are comprehensively vetting these immigrants to the levels that assure public safety.
