Two for one deals at Rookery golf courses

MILTON — Two for the price of one advertised items can be found nearly everywhere.

But among the places you will seldom come upon a two for one deal are golf courses.

That is unless you have considered joining The Rookery South, which is located just east of Milton.

Membership deals can be found for local golfers all summer.

Membership deals can be found for local golfers all summer.

Memberships, which range from $975 for an afternoon individual to $2,500 for a family, at The Rookery South also include the same playing and facility privileges at The Rookery North (former Shawnee Country Club) located in Milford.

“You can get two uniquely different golf courses for one membership,” said The Rookery PGA Professional and Director of Golf Butch Holtzclaw. “The Rookery South is a more open type of course, while The Rookery North is a more of a traditional type of course with tree-lined fairways.”

The 18-hole championship Rookery South course, which was designed by 2004 Senior British Open Champion Pete Oakley and Golf Course Superintendent Chris Adkins and has bentgrass fairways, tees and greens, is challenging for all levels of golfers.

“I think most people find the course challenging, but also find it fun,” said. Holtzclaw. “The course is mostly open and is not overly long, but at a par-71 it is a good golfing experience. Because the layout is mostly open, you can still have a good score on a hole even after an errant shot.

“Our greens putt very well, which allows most golfers to play well here, which is why most of our players are happy when the walk off the course after they are finished playing.”

According to the scorecard, The Rookery South course has four sets of tees with lengths ranging from 4,785 yards from the gold tees to 6,481 yards from the blue tees.

The par-35 front nine includes two drivable par 4s for those who want to take the risk, while the par-36 back nine includes three par 5s.

“This course can play tough if you want it to by making pin placements tough on our rolling greens,” Holtzclaw said. “However, we try to keep play fairly reasonable on a day-to-day basis in order to make it fun and a good pace of play. Overall, this course is like any course you play (in that) the more you play it the better you are going to score.”

The Rookery South offers a complete golfing experience, including a well-stocked pro shop, a state-of-the-art practice facility with a driving range, practice bunkers and chipping/putting green, golf instruction and lessons and the Blue Heron Grille for a nice place to gather after play.

“We have everything a golfer needs,” said Holtzclaw. “The pro shop also has all types of demo clubs and we have the fitting equipment which will provide you with the proper clubs to fit your swing.

If you are planning a golf outing, or other types of events, including weddings or business meetings, The Rookery South’s Club House is a place to consider.”

Greens fees, which vary depending on the time of day and year, include discounts for seniors (Tuesday and Thursday at The Rookery South and Monday and Wednesday at The Rookery North) as well as military and junior rates.
