Sussex County hosts win Pool B, advance to Big League Softball World Series semifinals

ROXANA – The Sussex County host District III Big League Softball all-star team has finished World Series Pool B play undefeated.

Thursday’s 11-5 victory over previously unbeaten U.S. Southwest (3-1) clinched the Pool B top spot and advanced District III to Friday’s 8 p.m. nationally televised semifinals bout with Pool A second place finisher U.S. West.

Falling behind Southwest 2-0 after the third inning, District III tied the game in the top of the fourth and then plated four runs in the fifth. Southwest rallied to make the score 6-5 in the home half of the fifth but was shutout the rest of the way while the hosts added five more runs to their tally.

With the Sussex County squad holding onto a 7-5 lead entering the top of the seventh, Courtney Tate put the game out of reach with a grand slam.

Morgan Smith also had a big day at the dish for the victors, going 2-for-2 with a pair of home runs.  Hailey Andrews left the yard for District III as well.

Jenna Willey notched a two-RBI double for the hosts, who last won the Big League Softball World Series in 2013.

U.S. Southwest will play Pool A winner Asia-Pacific (3-0) in the other semifinal. The World Series championship game is scheduled for Sunday at noon.
