Schools across county spring into action

SUSSEX COUNTY — Winter Storm Toby may have kept a handful of southern Delaware schools off ball fields for the first day of winter sports competition last Thursday, March 22, but things cleared up enough Friday and Saturday for teams to hit the field and/or court to kick-start the 2018 regular season.

Baseball

Indian River’s baseball squad started off the regular season schedule with a 15-1 victory over Woodbridge in five innings Friday, March 23.

Junior starting pitcher Mitch McGee hurled a complete game one-hitter, striking out four batters and surrending just one run in the top of the first inning to the Blue Raiders.

Junior Jacob Anderson went 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in six more for the Indians (1-0).

Senior Mark Smith went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Junior Kyle Firle (two), junior J.J. Killen (two), junior Grant Argo and senior Brock Wingate also drove in runs for IR.

Sussex Tech opened its season with a 6-1 loss to Cape Henlopen Friday, March 22.

Starting pitcher Brady Parks pitched 4.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits and striking out seven Cape batters.

IR will play host to Polytech Monday, March 26. First pitch is slated for 4:15 p.m.

Sussex Central travels to Sussex Tech Monday, March 26. First pitch is set for 4:15 p.m.

Boys’ lacrosse

Sussex Tech opened the schedule on the road at Wicomico (MD), pulling off a decisive 16-4 season-opening victory.

Senior Nate Quillin led the scoring with six goals and four assists.

Senior Kolby Wyatt added another five goals and senior Dane Zimmerman recorded a hat trick.

Sussex Central will have its first game of the season Monday, March 26 at 5:30 p.m. against North Caroline (MD), after Saturday’s opener against St. Mark’s was postponed.

Indian River will host Sussex Academy Monday, March 26 at 5 p.m. for its first game of the regular season. They’ll travel to Lake Forest Wednesday, March 28 for game No. 2 on the year (6 p.m.).

Girls’ lacrosse

Under first-year head coach Cathy Roselli, IR girls’ lacrosse opened the season with a 22-6 slaughter of Newark at home Saturday afternoon.

Senior Helen Davis and junior Alexis Webb each scored four goals for IR.

Senior Delaney Brannon and junior Brianna Dulsky scored hat tricks, while senior Kealey Allison recorded two goals and five assists.

Playing host to Wicomico (MD) Friday afternoon, Sussex Tech played shutdown defense with a 17-3 season-opening win.

Abigail Baird scored a team-high five goals. Junior Morgan Johnson scored four while sophomore Kayla Horn recorded a hat trick in the 14-goal win.

IR traveled to Caesar Rodney Tuesday, March 27 (score unavailable at time of press).

Sussex Tech will host Parkside (MD) Monday, March 26 at 4 p.m. and will host Cape Henlopen Wednesday, March 28 at 4 p.m.

Girls’ soccer

Indian River soccer plays its first game of the regular season Tuesday, March 27 at home against Polytech.

Sussex Tech opens the season at Lake Forest Tuesday, March 27.

Sussex Central opens its own season on the road Tuesday, March 27 at Sussex Academy.

Softball

It only took the Sussex Tech Lady Ravens six innings to shut out Cape Henlopen, 10-0, to open the season Friday afternoon.

Junior Taylor Wroten tossed a one-hit shutout for Tech, while Alyssa Collins drilled a first-inning homer to jumpstart a six-run inning.

As a team, Tech collected 13 hits and forced a pair of Cape errors.

For Indian River, Abigail O’Shields tossed a gem in the pitcher’s circle as the IR softball squad shut down the Woodbridge Blue Raiders, 10-1, Friday afternoon.

O’Shields surrendered just one first-inning run on five hits.

For Sussex Central, starting pitcher Kaisey Reed tossed a six-inning one-hitter in the Lady Golden Knights’ 11-1 win over St. George’s Tech at home Saturday afternoon.

The offense racked up 15 hits for Central, including a double, triple and home run.

Sussex Central is on the road against Sussex Tech Monday, March 26 at 4:15 p.m.

IR plays host to Polytech Monday, March 26 at 4:15 p.m. and will play its third game of the season on the road at Dover Wednesday, March 28. First pitch is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.

Boys’ tennis

In IR’s season-opener Friday afternoon, the squad lost a tough 4-1 match to Gunston (MD).

The second doubles team of Eddie Mochiam/Destin Smyth picked up the lone win for IR.

Sussex Central opens the season Wednesday, March 28 at home against Lake Forest (4 p.m.).

Girls’ tennis

The IR girls’ tennis squad opend the season Friday afternoon at home against Gunston (MD) and traveled to Lake Forest Tuesday, March 27 for its second match of the season.

The Sussex Central girls’ squad travels to Lake Forest Wednesday, March 28 (4 p.m.).
