IR, Tech reach respective soccer tourney fields

STATEWIDE – A pair of Henlopen South teams are in this year’s Division II boys’ soccer state tournament, one of them a mainstay the other busting a drought.

South – and overall conference –  champion Indian River (10-5) is the 12-team field’s No. 5 seed and will play last man in Brandywine (8-6-1) Tuesday, 8 p.m., at Dover High. The winner will play next Saturday versus No. 4 Delaware Military Academy (12-3), which earned a first round bye.

Prior to the IR game, No. 9 Milford (8-7) will play eighth-seeded Archmere (9-6) with a quarterfinals bout versus top-seed St. Andrews (12-3) on the line. Milford, which begins Tuesday’s match versus Archmere at 6 p.m., is in the Division II tournament for the first time. The Bucs last reached the postseason in 2012.

Along with St. Andrews and DMA, No. 2 Caravel (12-3) and No. 3 Tower Hill (11-1-3) also earned byes.

Division I

Half the eight-team Division I field is Henlopen North teams.

North champ Cape Henlopen (14-2) earned the best seed of the four, coming in at No. 3. The Vikings play rival Sussex Tech (10-3-2), the No. 6 seed, Saturday at Milford High, 7 p.m. Sussex Tech handed Cape its only defeat during the regular season (the Vikings lost to IR in the Henlopen Championship match).

Prior to Cape/Tech, No. 2 Salesianum (11-3-1) is scheduled to play No. 7 Polytech (12-3) at 5 p.m.

Caesar Rodney is the other North team in the field. The No. 5 Riders (11-4) will play No. 4 Wilmington Charter (12-3) at Smyrna High, 5 p.m. Following that match, No. 1 Appoquinimink (14-1) plays No. 8 Newark (12-3).
