Indian River, Sussex Tech reach respective girls’ soccer tournaments

STATEWIDE – Three Henlopen Conference Southern Division teams qualified for the girls’ soccer Division II state tournament.

South champion Indian River (13-2), which earned the third-seed and a first round bye, No. 6 Lake Forest (12-3) and No. 7 Delmar (10-4-1) will all represent the division in the 12-team field.

Lake will play No. 11 Conrad (7-6-2) on Saturday, 5 p.m., at Smyrna High. The winner there will get IR in the quarterfinals on either Wednesday or Thursday at an as of yet undecided time and site. Delmar and No. 10 Ursuline (8-7) will follow the Lake game, with the victor advancing to play second-seeded Archmere (13-1-1).

Defending state champion Caravel (13-1-1) is the tournament’s top seed and Wilmington Friends (12-2-1) earned the remaining bye as No. 4.

In Division I, three of the eight teams in the field are from the Henlopen North.

Padua (14-0-1) will defend its state championship as the No. 1 seed.

Northern Division champ Caesar Rodney (13-1-1) is the highest-seeded Henlopen team at No. 2 and will play seventh-seeded Newark (10-5), and No. 4 Sussex Tech (12-3) and No. 5 Smyrna (13-2) will open the tournament against each other.

Smyrna defeated Sussex Tech 2-1 during the regular season.

Division I tournament play begins next Wednesday and Thursday. Sites and times have not yet been announced.
