Delaware Tech cross country teams to kick-off 2018 season Saturday, Sept. 1

GEORGETOWN – The Delaware Technical Community College men’s and women’s cross country teams will look to build upon the successful 2017 season when the 2018 season kicks off on Saturday, Sept. 1.

Delaware Tech competes in Region XIX of the National Junior College Athletic Association, and the team is coached by Leak-Kate Lounsbury, Michael O’Brian, and Karin Ryndak. Male runners compete in an 8K distance, while female runners compete in a 5K distance.

The season begins with the Salisbury Fall Classic at WinterPlace Park in Salisbury, Md. on Sept. 1. The women’s race starts at 9:45 a.m. and the men’s race starts at 10:30 a.m. Delaware Tech competes in two other meets held in Delaware – the UD Blue & Gold Invitational at White Clay Creek State Park in Newark on Saturday, Oct. 6 and the Region XIX Championship Meet at White Clay Creek State Park on Sunday, Oct. 28. The teams compete in two other invitational meets in New Jersey and one in Pennsylvania this season.

The men’s team returns second-year runners Alexander Nieves, of Newark, and Dyce Bailey, of Dover. Both were consistently two of the team’s top three runners last season. The lone returning runner on the women’s team is Riccy Amaya, of Dover, who finished last season as the team’s fourth fastest runner.

Both the men’s and women’s teams have also experienced a lot of success over the years. In 2016, the men’s team won the NJCAA Division 1 Regional Championship and competed in the national tournament. In 2017, the men’s team finished runners-up at the regional championship. Meanwhile, the women’s team has had a top three finish in the national tournament in each of those years.
