State police, local authorities probing statewide school bomb threats

SUSSEX COUNTY – Delaware State Police are investigating bomb threats at four schools throughout Delaware, including Indian River High School and Seaford Middle School.

Threats received in school’s offices at Caesar Rodney High School and H.B. DuPont Middle School in Hockessin are also being investigated by state police.

In addition, investigations are being conducted by Dover Police Department, Smyrna Police Department and Milford Police Department for similar incidents that occurred at schools within their jurisdictions Monday morning, state police spokesman Cpl. Gary Fournier said.

The incidents occurred between 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday morning when a robotic style or computer-generated voice phone call was received in each of the school’s offices.

Students were evacuated from their respective schools and administrative searches were conducted along with the use of state police bomb-detecting K9 units.

Nothing out of the ordinary or suspicious was located, Cpl. Fournier said.

Students and staff were allowed back into their school upon the completion of the searches and resumed their daily activities. Evacuations of the schools lasted between 45 minutes to three hours.

The threat to Indian River High School in Dagsboro was received at about 9:35 a.m. and the building was declared safe at about 11:20 a.m., according to Indian River School District spokesman David Maull.

Indian River students and staff were transported to John M. Clayton Elementary School – the former high school – located about a mile away in Frankford, and returned to finish a normal schedule once authorities deemed the building safe.

State police ask anyone with any information regarding these to contact Troop 2 Youth Aid Division at 302-834-2620, Troop 3 Youth Aid Division at 302-697-4454, or Troop 4 Youth Aid Division at 302-856-5850.
