Showell school mural: History of Selbyville a work of student art

SELBYVILLE – Phillip C. Showell Elementary School, in partnership with local artist John Donato, is creating a special “History of Selbyville” mural in one of the school’s hallways.

Mr. Donato, of Ocean View, has undertaken student/school/community-based mural projects at several other schools in the Indian River School District.

Showell students began painting the mural Jan. 19. Art work will continue until the official unveiling on March 7.

The school will host a series of special events in the coming weeks leading up to the unveiling ceremony.

Special events

Feb. 8: The family of Phillip C. Showell will host a special assembly to talk about the history of the family and school. The presentation will begin at 9 a.m.

Feb. 12: Donors Paint Day, 12:35 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.: Local business owners and community members who made monetary donations towards the creation of the mural and the school’s mural-themed T-shirts are invited to paint. Light refreshments will be served in the art room.

March 7: Mural Reveal Day. The mural will be unveiled to students during the school day and to families and community members that evening.

The afternoon presentation will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the viewing of a short documentary film about the project and a presentation by Delaware Secretary of Education Dr. Susan Bunting.

This will be followed by a ribbon cutting and museum tour for students.

The evening ceremony for families and community members will run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
