June 7 last student day in adjusted IRSD calendar

GEORGETOWN – With one day of weather-cancellation forgiveness, school will be officially out after June 7 for students in the Indian River School District.

At its regular monthly meeting on April 23, the Indian River School District board of education approved a series of changes to the 2017-18 school district calendar.

The last day of school for students is now Thursday, June 7.

The last day for preschool students will be Friday, June 1. The last day for teachers and paraprofessionals will be Monday, June 11.

In addition, Sussex Central High School’s senior exams will now be held on May 22-23.

The changes are the result of unused surplus hours built into the calendar to compensate for weather-related school cancellations.

IRSD Superintendent Mark Steele said the district, and others in the state, had hoped for more than one day of forgiveness due to snow and weather cancellations.

However, Delaware Department of Education Secretary Dr. Susan Bunting has requested one forgiveness day.

“We thought that best balance would be to ask for two. We were rather shocked when Dr. Bunting wrote back and said she was going to ask for one day forgiveness,” said Mr. Steele. “If we had two days it worked out great; we ended staff on Friday. Now, this puts us in a position to bring the staff back on Monday.”
