Carver Academy hosting mural unveiling/community night Oct. 2

FRANKFORD – A school/community-based work of art in the works for nearly a year will soon be christened at G.W. Carver Academy.

On Oct. 2, the Indian River School District’s alternative school will host the mural project unveiling/community night. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Local artist John Donato preps students and staff during the mural kickoff event at Carver Academy last December.

Throughout the 2016-17 school year, G.W. Carver Academy students worked with local artist John Donato to create several motivational murals that will be on display throughout the school building.

Mr. Donato, from Ocean View, has collaborated with several schools in the Indian River School District to encourage, teach and support social skills, character development and citizenship through his integrated approach.

The art project at Carver Academy, a special-purpose school for students up to 18, ties into the school’s new Positive Action curriculum.

A community kickoff was held at the school last December.

Carver students and staff are inviting families, local legislators, community agencies, school supporters and local residents to the official unveiling of the murals.

The event will also feature a performance by local musician Taylor Knox.

The mural project was made possible in part by a grant from the Delaware Community Foundation’s Next Generation South program.

The public is invited to attend the mural unveiling. RSVP to school counselor Whitney Price at 732-3800 by Sept. 22.
