Warrant attempt leads to drug discovery, three arrests

LAUREL – Delaware State Police made three arrests Monday after a warrant attempt led to the discovery of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

The incident began July 23 when members of the Sussex County Governor’s Task Force were conducting a warrant attempt for 42-year-old Richie Hurley in the 29000 block of Discount Land Road, state police spokesman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

Richie Hurley is a level 3 probation absconder and was wanted on a capias from Superior Court for failure to appear for drug court.

As an officer approached the side door of the residence, a subject identified as 23-year-old Dwayne Hurley of Bridgeville exited the residence then turned away and ran back inside when he discovered the police presence.

After a brief chase officers took Dwayne Hurley into custody inside the residence.  A search revealed Dwayne Hurley was in possession of cocaine.

Richie Hurley was located in the residence and was taken into custody without incident.  A search revealed Richie Hurley was in possession of a large amount of suspected drug proceeds, Cpl. Jaffe said.

While inside the residence, officers found a drug paraphernalia and a children’s “Paw Patrol” bag.  In the bag, officers discovered a large quantity of cocaine as well as other narcotics and drug paraphernalia.  While searching the rest of the residence for additional persons, officers discovered a 24-year-old Delmar man hiding in the garage.

The following evidence was seized as part of this investigation:

  • Approximately 57.08 grams of cocaine
  • (31) 15mg Oxycodone pills
  • (9) .5mg Alprazolam pills
  • (16) bags of heroin
  • (2) Suboxone film strips
  • Approximately 0.08 grams of amphetamine
  • (2) digital scales
  • Numerous items of drug storage paraphernalia
  • Over $1700.00 in suspected drug proceeds

All three suspects were taken to Troop 4, arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 3 and charged as follows:

Richie Hurley

  • Drug dealing cocaine in a tier 4 quantity
  • Possession of cocaine in a tier 5 quantity
  • Drug dealing Oxycodone in a tier 2 quantity
  • Possession of a controlled substance (Alprazolam)
  • Possession of a controlled substance (Suboxone)
  • Possession of a controlled substance (heroin)
  • Possession of a controlled substance (amphetamine)
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia-(3 counts)

Richie Hurley was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $127,750 cash only bond.

Dwayne Hurley

  • Hindering prosecution
  • Resisting arrest
  • Possession of cocaine
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

Dwayne Hurley was released on $2,000 unsecured bond.

24-year-old Delmar man

  • Resisting arrest

Released on $500 unsecured bond.
