Vehicle target of gunfire

BRIDGEVILLE – Delaware State Police are seeking public assistance in their investigation of gunfire targeting a car with three occupants, including a 6-year-old girl.

According to state police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier, the incident occurred Sunday around 6:15 p.m. in the Coverdale area.

The car, occupied by a 51-year-old female driver, her 56-year-old husband and 6-year-old daughter, was struck twice, Cpl. Fournier said.

Investigation revealed the woman was northbound on Coverdale Road just south of Del. 404 when a car began to tailgate her vehicle. After crossing Del. 404 onto Chaplins Chapel Road, the dark-colored suspect car continued to follow closely behind and after the woman turned onto Apple Tree Road the other vehicle began to pass her, during which two gunshots were heard. The woman told police she could hear bullets striking her vehicle.

The woman drove into a field in efforts to elude the suspects. Two more gunshots were fired at her car and then two more when she made a U-turn to drive in the opposite direction, Cpl. Fournier said.

None of the occupants of the targeted vehicle were injured. The woman drove to Troop 5 in Bridgeville and reported the incident.

The woman’s vehicle sustained two bullet holes on the driver’s side, Cpl. Fournier said.

No other description was given for the suspect vehicle except for a dark colored car.
