Georgetown woman, Seaford man killed in crash west of Georgetown

GEORGETOWN – Two people were killed Friday afternoon in a near head-on collision on County Seat Highway west of Georgetown.

Katherine E. Chick, 76,  of Georgetown and 57-year-old George C. Hassett of Seaford died in the crash that occurred at about 1:12 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 9 (County Seat Highway) and Tyndall Road, Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Jeffrey Hale said.

Investigation revealed Mr. Hassett was westbound on U.S. 9 in a 2000 Oldsmobile when it crossed the center-line into the path of a 1994 Chrysler LeBaron operated by Ms. Chick.

The driver of the LeBaron swerved her vehicle slightly to avoid the collision, but the vehicles collided almost head-on in the eastbound lane, Cpl. Hale said.

A 45-year-old female passenger in the Oldsmobile was transported by ambulance to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, said Cpl. Hale.

The crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit. It is unknown if impairment on the part of either driver was a factor in this crash, Cpl. Hale said.

The intersection of U.S. 9 and Tyndall Road was closed for approximately four hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
