Two Laurel men killed in head-on crash

LAUREL – Two Laurel men were killed and the driver of another vehicle injured Monday evening in a head-on crash east of Laurel.

Delaware State Police report Edward A. Spicer, 55, and a passenger, Jerry L. Whiteman, 57, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that occurred about 8:25 p.m. on Del. 24 just west of Jestice Farm Road.

Investigation revealed Mr. Spicer was operating a 1992 Nissan Stanza westbound on Del. 24. Ronald J. Barde, 56, of Millsboro was eastbound in a Mazda CX5.

For unknown reasons the Mazda entered the westbound lane directly into the path of the Nissan, state police spokesman Cpl. Gary Fournier said.

Mr. Barde, who was properly restrained, was initially transported by EMS to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital before he was airlifted to Christiana Medical Center where he was admitted in serious condition, Cpl. Fournier said.

State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident and alcohol involvement is unknown, Cpl. Fournier said.

Del. 24 was closed between Jestice Farm Road and Hitch Pond Road for approximately four hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

State police ask that anyone who may have witnessed this incident or have any information contact Cpl. N. Demalto at 302-703-3267.  Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333, via the internet at www.delaware.crimestoppersweb.com, or by sending an anonymous tip by text to 274637 (CRIMES) using the keyword “DSP.”
