Suspect dies from gunshot during Coverdale-area break-in

BRIDGEVILLE – Delaware State Police are investigating the death of a suspect who was shot during an apparent home invasion of a home in the Coverdale area late Sunday night.

State police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said the incident occurred around 11:54 p.m. Sept. 24. A 9-1-1 call placed from the 11000 block of Iris Field Lane reported that a subject had been shot inside the residence.

Upon arrival, troopers found an unresponsive adult male near the kitchen area with a gunshot wound to the upper torso.  The suspect, later identified as 20-year-old Larry T. Hobbs of Laurel, was pronounced dead at the scene by Sussex County EMS paramedics.

Preliminary investigation revealed a man was alone inside the house when two suspects broke in.  A struggle ensued with one of the suspects armed with a handgun when a single round was fired, striking the suspect in the upper torso, Cpl. Fournier said.

The second suspect fled the scene.  The resident was uninjured in the incident. The suspect that fled is described as a male wearing all dark clothing and a mask over his face.

State police homicide detectives are conducting interviews and collecting evidence at the scene to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident.
