Laurel man, 82, struck and killed crossing U.S. 13

LAUREL – Delaware State Police are continuing the investigation of a fatal pedestrian accident Aug. 25 in which 82-year-old Southey White of Laurel was struck and killed while attempting to cross U.S. 13.

Preliminary investigation revealed the incident occurred around 4:53 p.m. as Robert C. Moore III, 19, of Delmar, DE, was operating a 2000 GMC Sierra pickup truck southbound in the right lane on Sussex Highway (U.S. 13) just north of Boyce Road.

Mr. White was walking westbound from the center median and entered into the southbound lanes where he was struck by the front left side of the pickup and thrown to the ground, according to state police spokesman Cpl. Gary Fournier.

Mr. White was transported by EMS to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Mr. Moore, who was properly restrained, was also taken by EMS to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries.
