Passed out at the wheel, Federalsburg man, 19, charged

BRIDGEVILLE – Delaware State Police arrested a Federalsburg, MD man Wednesday for drug and weapon charges after he was found to be driving under the influence.

At approximately 11:23 p.m., Aug. 29 troopers were dispatched to the intersection of Evans Drive and Iris Field Lane.

Troopers came upon a Hyundai, stopped in the middle of the intersection with front end damage and the driver, 19-year-old Gregory A. Dukes, passed out behind the wheel, state police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

In contacting the driver, an odor of marijuana was detected.

Further investigation revealed the Electra had left Sussex Highway, struck a ditch and re-entered the roadway where it eventually came to a stop at the intersection of Evans Drive and Iris Field Lane, Cpl. Jaffe said.

A DUI investigation was initiated, and Dukes was taken into custody.

A search of Dukes yielded drug paraphernalia.  A search of the vehicle yielded approximately 1.4 grams of marijuana, six 1mg. Alprazolam pills, a .22 caliber revolver, a .22 caliber long rifle, ammunition, and drug paraphernalia, Cpl. Jaffe said.

Dukes was transported back to Troop 5 where he was charged with:

  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon (two counts)
  • Possession of Marijuana
  • Possession of a Firearm while under the influence (two counts)
  • Possess/Consume a Controlled or Counterfeit Substance
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (two counts)
  • Leaving the Scene of Property Collision Accident
  • Failure to Provide Information At Collision Scene
  • Driving a Vehicle Under the Influence of Drug

Dukes was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $12,900 secured bond.
