Ocean View Police Chief Ken McLaughlin said the incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. May 26 on Atlantic Avenue near Central Avenue.

Investigation revealed Mr. Yergey was riding his bike in bike lane when a 2018 Subaru Forester in the left turn lane failed to yield the right-of-way. The Subaru’s front bumper struck the front tire of the bicycle.

Critically injured, Mr. Yergey  was flown by Delaware State Police helicopter to Christiana Hospital. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, Chief McLaughlin said.

Ocean View Police identified the driver as 65-year-old Jodi Silverman Bartow of Bethesda, MD. Police are continuing to investigate the collision. No charges have been filed against Bartow at this time.

Alcohol/unsafe speed is not a factor on behalf of the driver of the Subaru or the bicyclist.

At the time of the collision, traffic was heavy due to the holiday weekend. Eastbound vehicle traffic was stop-and-go. A pickup truck in the eastbound lane of Atlantic Avenue stopped to let the Forester make a left turn into the parking lot, according to Ocean View police investigation.  However, the Forester driver did not yield to the bicyclist.

As a result of the collision, Atlantic Avenue from Old School Lane to Woodland Avenue was shut down for approximately three hours.
