Murder suspect in custody in Virginia pending extradition

BRIDGEVILLE – Delaware State Police report the murder suspect wanted in a shooting near Bridgeville in late January is behind bars in Virginia, awaiting extradition to Delaware.

Jared C. Mitchell

The state police homicide unit March 28 received information that 31-year-old Jared C. Mitchell of Greenwood was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Task Force, according to state police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe.

State police had identified Mitchell as the suspect in the death of Tavyon M. Sykes, 18, of Greenwood.

Preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 1:41 a.m. Jan. 25, troopers were notified a victim, later identified as Mr. Sykes had been dropped off by a private vehicle at the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford.

Troopers were informed that the victim had been shot and succumbed to his injuries. The shooting was reported to have occurred at the intersection of Newton Road and Adams Road in Bridgeville.

On Jan. 26, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Mitchell for murder first degree, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, reckless endangering and two counts possession of a firearm by a person prohibited.

Mitchell was located at a residence in Horntown, VA.  With the assistance of the Accomack County Sherriff’s Office and the Eastern Shore Drug Task Force, a search warrant was executed on that residence in which drug evidence was recovered.

Mitchell remains in custody in Virginia on drug charges and a fugitive warrant, pending his extradition back to Delaware, Cpl. Jaffe said.

This case remains under investigation.
