UPDATE: Laurel woman, 18, killed in crash identified

LAUREL – An 18-year-old Laurel woman was killed Sunday, Aug. 12 in an early-morning, one-vehicle crash near Laurel, Delaware State Police report.

The crash involving a 2004 Kia Optima driven by Miranda A. Daugherty occurred at about 2:53 a.m. Aug. 12 on Fire tower Road, about a half mile north of County Seat Highway (US 9), state police spokesman Master Cpl. Michael Austin said.

Investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit determined the Kia was northbound on Fire Tower Road at an apparent high rate of speed when it went off the roadway on a curve, spun and crashed into a tree.

Ms. Daugherty was pronounced deceased at the scene, Cpl. Austin said. She was not properly restrained and was the only occupant of the vehicle, Cpl. Austin said.

Fire Tower Road was closed for approximately three hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

Investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Cpl. J. Burns of the Troop7 Collision Reconstruction Unit at 644-5020.
