Suspect sought in shooting homicide

BRIDGEVILLE – Delaware State Police launched a homicide investigation Thursday after a reported shooting victim was dropped off at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford.

Upon arrival at the hospital, troopers were informed that the deceased – later identified as 18-year-old Tavyon M. Sykes of Greenwood – had been shot and succumbed to his injuries, according to state police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe.

On Friday, Jan. 26, state police detectives obtained an arrest warrant for suspect Jared C. Mitchell, 31, of Greenwood for murder first degree, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, reckless endangering, and two counts possession of a firearm by a person prohibited.

The shooting was reported to have occurred at the intersection of Newton Road and Adams Road near Bridgeville, Cpl. Jaffe said.

Preliminary investigation began Jan. 25 at approximately 1:41 p.m. State police were notified that a victim had been dropped off by a private vehicle at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital.

Newton Road at the intersection of Adams Road was closed for approximately one hour while troopers secured and investigated the scene, Cpl. Jaffe said.

This incident remains under investigation by the state police homicide unit.
