Head-on collision leaves one dead, one injured

HARBESON – A two-vehicle collision Sunday evening left a Milton man dead and a woman from Wilmington injured.

Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. Gary Fournier said the crash occurred shortly after 7 p.m. Oct. 18 on Harbeson Road involving a 2000 Mercury Marquis operated by Gianfranco D. Carta, 34, of Milton, and a 2011 Mazda MX3 driven by Paula J. Pennington, 49, of Wilmington.

Mr. Carta was taken to Beebe Healthcare where he was pronounced dead, Cpl. Fournier said.

Ms. Pennington was admitted to Beebe with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigation revealed the Marquis was northbound on Harbeson Road and for unknown reasons drifted into the southbound, striking the Mazda head-on.

Both drivers were extensively trapped and were extrication by local fire department personnel, Cpl. Fournier said.

Mr. Carta was not properly restrained; Ms. Pennington was wearing a seatbelt, investigation revealed.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation.  Preliminary information obtained through witness accounts indicate the Marquis may not have had its headlights on prior to the collision, Cpl. Fournier said.
