Greenwood woman dies when car rear-ends tractor trailer

SEAFORD – A Greenwood woman died Wednesday afternoon when her vehicle slammed into the rear of a tractor trailer, Delaware State Police report.

Holly R. Boyce, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred around 12:20 p.m. on U.S. 13 south of Cannon Road, state police spokesman Cpl. Gary Fournier said.

Preliminary investigation indicates Tia M. Gaines, 56, of Felton, was operating a 2010 Freightliner Cascadia pulling an enclosed trailer southbound on U.S. 13 south of SR 18 in the right lane.

Ms. Boyce was operating a 2007 Buick Lucerne southbound on U.S. 13 directly behind the tractor trailer in the right lane.

As the tractor trailer began to slow and activate its right turn signal to pull into a business entrance, Ms. Boyce failed to see the truck slowing and continued into the rear of the trailer, Cpl. Fournier said.

The Buick significantly under-rode the trailer, striking the ICC bar (metal bar at the end of the trailer) and then the fifth axle, investigation revealed.

The tractor trailer driver was properly restrained and uninjured.
