Girl, 9, struck in hit-and-run succumbs to injuries

SEAFORD – A 9-year-old girl was critically injured Thursday afternoon in a hit-and-run crash east of Seaford has succumbed to her injuries, Delaware State Police report.

Preliminary investigation revealed the crash occurred Thursday, April 12 at approximately 5:05 p.m. on German Road about seven tenths of a mile south of Old Furnace Road.

Investigation determined the girl was struck by a white 2002 Mazda Protégé as she was walking back to her residence after checking the mailbox, state police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

After the collision, the Madza continued on.

The girl was flown to A.I. Dupont Children’s Hospital and admitted in critical condition. She died Saturday, April 14 at 10:49 p.m.

Troopers located the operator of the Mazda, a 21-year-old Seaford man. Charges were not filed as of Friday morning.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation.
