Georgetown man dies when tractor overturns in water-filled tax ditch

GEORGETOWN – A 47-year-old Georgetown man apparently drowned Wednesday when the tractor he was operating overturned along a tax ditch, trapping him underwater Delaware State Police report.

Preliminary investigation revealed Kendall B. Hastings was cutting brush with an older model Ford farm tractor behind his County Seat Highway residence along a water-filled tax ditch, state police spokesman Sgt. Richard Bratz said.

When the right rear tire slipped off the steeply-angled ditch, the tractor overturned and Mr. Hastings was trapped underwater, Sgt. Bratz said.

The incident occurred around 6:45 p.m.

The Delaware Division of Forensic Science removed the body from the scene.

An autopsy will be conducted in an attempt to determine the cause and manner of death, Sgt. Bratz said.

Delaware State Police’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident.
