Georgetown man dies in crash

GEORGETOWN – Delaware State Police report a Georgetown man died Saturday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash near Georgetown.

The crash occurred at about 2:46 p.m. on West Piney Grove Road south of East Trap Pond Road involving a Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck driven by the 63-year-old Thomas D. Clarke and a Jeep Cherokee operated by a 53-year-old Georgetown man.

According to state police spokesman Master Cpl. Michael Austin, investigation determined the S-10 pickup was westbound on West Piney Grove Road when it went off the road, then re-entered the roadway directly into the path of the Jeep Cherokee.

The driver of the Jeep was unable to avoid the collision.

Mr. Clarke, the driver of the Chevrolet pickup, was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, Cpl. Austin said.

The operator of the Jeep was transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The roadway was closed for approximately three hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
