Georgetown man arrested in Ellendale burglary probe

ELLENDALE – Delaware State Police arrested a Georgetown man in connection with a recent residential burglary.

Eric B. Whitman, 29, faces burglary and other charges in connection with the incident that occurred sometime between June 18 and July 3 at a residence in the 14000 block of Beaver Dam Road, state police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

A 40-year-old man reported that when he returned from vacation he noticed that property was missing and a window was unsecured.  Further investigation revealed a jar containing an undisclosed amount of money, along with approximately 50 crab traps and scrap metal were taken.

Through investigative measures, troopers identified Eric B. Whitman as the suspect.  Troopers learned that Whitman had taken the stolen metal to a scrap yard, signed the receipt indicating he was the owner and received a cash payment, Cpl. Jaffe said.

State police on Saturday, July 7, was arrested Whitman on charges of burglary second degree dwelling, theft $1,500 or greater, selling stolen property value over $1,500, theft under $1,500, theft by false pretense under $1,500 and falsifying business records.

Whitman was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $17,000 secured bond.
