Fatal motorcycle crash west of Broadkill Beach

MILTON – Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash Monday in which a Pennsylvania man was killed and his wife was injured.

The crash occurred around 5:45 p.m. Sept. 7 as Darrell E. Waller Jr., 56, of Pittsburgh, was operating a 2004 Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound on Broadkill Road (SR 16) just west of Bay Shore Drive approaching a sharp right curve, state police spokesman Cpl. Gary Fournier said.

For unknown reasons, Mr. Waller failed to negotiate the turn and crossed the eastbound lanes before exiting the south side of the road where the motorcycle struck a road sign.  The motorcycle then went down an embankment, ejecting Mr. Waller and his wife into the marsh.

Mr. Waller, who was wearing an approved DOT helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple traumatic injuries sustained in the crash, Cpl. Fournier said.

Lucinda Waller, 56 of Pittsburgh, was also wearing an approved DOT helmet and was transported by EMS to Beebe Healthcare where she was admitted with undetermined injuries.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident.  Alcohol and speed do not appear to be contributing factors in this case.
