Elderly Bethany man pinned between vehicles in parking lot hit and run

OCEAN VIEW – A 69-year-old Bethany Beach man sustained multiple injuries late Monday morning when he was pinned between two vehicles in a pedestrian hit-and-run incident in the parking lot of the Atlantic Community Thrift Shop.

Delaware State Police investigation revealed the incident occurred just before 11 a.m. June 12.

State police say Stephen K. Rapley was standing near the passenger side of a Ford Econoline box truck when a red vehicle entered the parking lot and struck the box truck, subsequently pinning Mr. Rapley between the two vehicles.

After impact, the vehicle stopped the driver and a passenger switched positions, according to state police spokesman Sgt. Richard Brat

The suspect vehicle left the crash scene approximately 30 seconds after the initial impact.

Mr. Rapley was initially treated at the scene by Sussex County Paramedics. He was then transported by ambulance to the Beebe Healthcare Medical Center and admitted with multiple injuries, Sgt. Bratz said.

Troopers continue to collect and analyze evidence at the scene to determine make and model of the suspect vehicle.

The area of the collision in the parking lot at 34634 Atlantic Avenue was closed for approximately one hour while the crash was investigated and cleared.

State police are attempting to locate the driver and vehicle.
