UPDATE: Delmar woman, 22, killed when vehicle is struck by train

DELMAR – Delaware State Police say a 22-year-old Delmar woman was killed when the vehicle she was operating was struck by a Delmarva Central Railroad train Friday morning at a railroad crossing north of Delmar.

Raelyn Huffman was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. It occurred at about 9 a.m. May 4 at the crossing on Bacons Road between Powell Farm Lane and County Walk west of U.S. 13A (Bi-State Boulevard), state police spokeswoman Sgt. Richard Bratz said.

Preliminary investigation determined the 2017 Ford Focus was eastbound on Bacons Road when for unknown reasons the driver failed to see crossing safety signals or hear the crossing’s audible bell or the train’s horn and crossed onto the tracks.

The southbound Delmarva Central Railroad train struck the vehicle in the left side. The vehicle came to rest in a private yard. The train, which consisted of the front diesel locomotive, five empty grain cars and an additional locomotive, immediately stopped.

The engineer and conductor were not injured.

The traffic signal crossing warning devices were checked and found to be working properly, Sgt. Bratz said.

The National Transportation Safety Board, Delmarva Central Railroad and Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control were notified.

Investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Master Corporal K. Argo of the Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit at 644-5020.
