Dirt bike/car crash claims life of Millsboro man

DAGSBORO – A 31-year-old Millsboro man died Tuesday from injuries sustained in crash involving his dirt bike and a car, Delaware State Police report.

The crash occurred shortly after 11 a.m. along U.S. 113 involving a 2008 Honda CRF 450 dirt bike operated by the Millsboro man and a 1994 Buick Century driven by a 46-year-old woman from Frankford, state police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

Investigation revealed the dirt bike operator was traveling north on the southbound shoulder of U.S. 113 approaching a private driveway exiting the Del-One Federal Credit Union. The driver of the Buick was exiting the Del-One parking lot preparing to merge into the southbound lanes.

Police say the Honda approached on the shoulder at a high rate of speed and in an effort to avoid the collision, the driver attempted to lay the bike down. However, it collided with the right front side of the Buick on the shoulder.

The Honda came to a stop along the west side of the roadway. The driver of the Honda landed in the right lane of U.S. 113. He was transported by EMS to Beebe Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, Cpl. Jaffe said. State police have not yet released his identity.

The driver of the Buick came to a controlled stop almost immediately. She was transported by EMS to Atlantic General Hospital and admitted with minor injuries.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation into the crash.

Southbound U.S. 113, south of Molly Field Road was closed for approximately 3½ hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
