Child succumbs to injuries sustained in head-on crash

MILLSBORO – A head-on crash Sept. 17 near Millsboro has claimed the life of an 8-month-old girl.

Elicha Saint Fleur died Sunday at A.I. DuPont Hospital, four days after she was critically injured in the crash that occurred on Betts Pond Road, Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said.

State police investigation revealed the little girl was improperly secured in a forward-facing car seat in the right rear seat. She was initially transported by EMS to Beebe Healthcare in Lewes and later transferred to A.I. DuPont Hospital.

The crash involved a 2006 KIA operated by a 40-year-old Laurel man and a 2004 Mack CV& dump truck loaded with concrete sand operated by a 54-year-old Dagsboro man.

Investigation revealed the Kia failed to negotiate a curve due to excessive speed and wet roadway and crossed into the eastbound lane. The driver of dump truck swerved but the two vehicles collided head-on.

The driver of the Kia was treated at Beebe Healthcare for non-life-threatening injuries.

The dump truck driver was uninjured.

The crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
