Charges pending in double fatal on U.S. 13 near Laurel

LAUREL – A Salisbury man faces charges stemming from a two-vehicle accident Wednesday morning that claimed the lives of two other people, Delaware State Police report.

The crash involving a 2014 Ford Taurus operated by Nour-Eddine H. Baassiri, 31, of Salisbury, and a 2006 Scion TC driven by a Downingtown, Pa. man occurred at about 10:12 a.m. on U.S. 13 just south of Salt Barn Road, according to state police spokesman Cpl. Gary Fournier said.

A 28-year old male passenger in Mr. Baassiri’s vehicle was not properly restrained and was pronounced dead at the scene, Cpl. Fournier said. The man’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. He was from Ocean City, Md., Cpl. Fournier said.

The 42-year-old Downingtown man was properly restrained and removed from the scene by EMS. He was transported to Peninsula Regional Medical Center where he later died from his injuries. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, said Cpl. Fournier.

Investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit revealed the vehicle operated by Mr. Baassiri was northbound on U.S. 13 when it left the roadway, slid through the grass median and entered the southbound lane where it was collided with the Scion.

Nour-Eddine H. Baassiri, who was properly restrained, was transported by EMS to PRMC where was admitted with non-life-threatening injuries. Upon his release he will be charged with two counts of operation of a motor vehicle causing death, inattentive driving, failure to maintain lane, and a seatbelt violation, Cpl. Fournier said.
