Charges filed against driver in fatal hit and run

SEAFORD – Delaware State Police arrested a 21-year-old Seaford man involved a pedestrian hit and run crash that claimed the life of a 9-year-old girl.

Through investigation, troopers located 21-year-old Dwayne R. McConnell, the operator of the Mazda involved in the hit and run that occurred April 12, state police spokesman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

On Monday, April 16, McConnell was charged with operation of a vehicle causing death of another person, inattentive driving, leaving scene of a collision resulting in death, failure to report a collision resulting in injury or death and possession of marijuana. McConnell was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on $6,151 unsecured bond.

The incident occurred April 12 at approximately 5:05 p.m. Investigation determined a 2002 Mazda Protégé northbound on German Road struck a 9-year-old child as she was walking back to her residence after checking the mailbox.  The Mazda fled the scene.

The girl was flown by the Delaware State Police helicopter to A.I. Dupont Children’s Hospital where she was admitted in critical condition. On Saturday, April 14, the girl succumbed to her injuries, state police said.
