8-month-old child critically injured in head-on crash

MILLSBORO – An 8-month-old girl was critically injured in a head-on crash on Betts Pond Road Wednesday morning.

The crash involved a 2006 KIA operated by a 40-year-old Laurel man and a 2004 Mack CV& dump truck loaded with concrete sand operated by a 54-year-old Dagsboro man, Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said.

Investigation revealed the Kia failed to negotiate a curve due to excessive speed and wet roadway and crossed into the eastbound lane into the path of the oncoming dump truck. The driver of dump truck swerved but was unable to avoid the head-on collision, state police said.

The 8-month-old child in the Kia was improperly secured in a forward-facing car seat in the right rear seat, Cpl. Fournier said. She was initially transported by EMS to Beebe Healthcare in Lewes and later transferred to A.I. DuPont Hospital and was admitted in critical condition.

The 40-year-old operator of the Kia was treated at Beebe Healthcare for non-life-threatening injuries.

The dump truck driver was uninjured.

Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation.  No charges have been filed at this time.  Alcohol and drugs are not a factor in this crash.

Betts Pond Road eastbound and westbound at Delaware Avenue were closed for approximately four hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
