Life-saving hero Sussex County’s ‘Heroic Firefighter of the Year’

LAUREL – A veteran firefighter who rescued two children from a burning residence was honored recently for his life-saving heroics.

Greg Adkins of Laurel was named the Sussex County Firefighters Association’s 2016 Heroic Firefighter of the Year.

The announcement was made by Sussex County Firefighters Association president Holland Hunter at the August meeting of the county firefighters association.

Mr. Adkins, a past assistant chief of the Laurel Fire Department, was honored for his actions at the scene of a June 13 house fire on 7th Street in Laurel.

With smoke pouring from the structure, Mr. Adkins entered the house not once but twice to rescue two little girls.

Soon after, fire engulfed the entire residence.
