Embezzlement: Former Millville fire company treasurer gets six-month prison sentence

GEORGETOWN – A former Millville Volunteer Fire Company treasurer charged with embezzling more than $190,000 from the fire company will spend six months behind bars.

Justin K. Oakley

Justin K. Oakley of Dagsboro was sentenced by Superior Court Judge E. Scott Bradley Friday to six months in prison, followed by six months of home confinement, then one year of probation, according to Department of Justice spokesman Carl Kanefsky.

Oakley was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $5181.88 in the sentence handed down by Judge Bradley.

Oakley pled guilty on Sept. 20, 2017 to theft over $50,000. Oakley was initially charged with theft over $100,000 and 100 counts of falsifying business records by Delaware State Police.

Oakley turned himself in to detectives May 10, 2016 after the Delaware State Police Troop 4 Financial Crimes Unit received a forensic audit from the State of Delaware Office of Auditor of Accounts.

This audit revealed Mr. Oakley, during his tenure as Millville Volunteer Fire Department treasurer, Justin Oakley, had conducted over $190,000 in personal transactions using fire department funds while acting as the organization’s treasurer between Jan. 1, 2012 and June 30, 2015.

The information came to light after Mr. Oakley admitted to Millville Volunteer Fire Company officials in a meeting around May of 2015 that he used the fire company’s money for personal transactions, according to state police.
