Jesse Vanderwende seeking 35th District Representative seat

BRIDGEVILLE – Local farmer and businessman Jesse Vanderwende announced Monday he has filed to represent the 35th District in the Delaware State House of Representatives.

The Bridgeville Republican is seeking to replace 10-year veteran State Representative Dave Wilson, who announced Feb. 2 that he will be running for the 18th district senate seat.

Mr. Vanderwende said Rep. Wilson approached him and asked him to consider running in the fall 2018 election.

“I gave it a lot of thought and discussed it with my wife, Taylor, and other members of my family,” he said.  “Earlier today I registered as a candidate at the Sussex County Department of Elections.  I’m humbled to offer myself for consideration.”

Mr. Vanderwende is no stranger to public and community service.  He is the past president and a current member of the Bridgeville Kiwanis Club; the past president of the Delaware Soybean Board; a member of the Delaware State Fair Board; and the current president of the Sussex County Farm Bureau.

The Vanderwende Family farms 4,000 acres in western Sussex County, cultivating watermelons, grains, sweet corn, and peas.  They also have a dairy herd of 240 Holstein cows and raise chickens for Perdue.

The Vanderwendes are perhaps best known for operating a retail and wholesale ice cream business with locations in Bridgeville, Greenwood, and Dewey Beach.

“Agriculture is Delaware’s top industry, and I want to be a part of boosting Delaware’s economy by not only focusing on ag, but all areas important to the 35th,” Mr. Vanderwende said.  “Jobs, the education system, infrastructure, and public safety just to name a few.  One of the reasons I decided to run is to be a voice in Dover that reflects the conservative values of the constituents in the 35th District.”

The 35th Representative District encompasses northwest and north-central Sussex County, including the municipalities of Bridgeville, Greenwood and a portion of Georgetown.
