Signs of change in place at county’s Delaware Coastal Airport

GEORGETOWN – Signs of change at and near the Delaware Coastal Airport bearing the facility’s new name were nearing completion prior to the holiday break.

Next on the county’s agenda for 2016: an additional airport sign on Sussex Academy property at Airport Road and Rt. 9.

“The next step would be to add an additional airport sign that would be located at the corner of Airport Road and Rt. 9 as you enter into Georgetown,” said Sussex County Administrator Todd Lawson in an update at the Dec. 15 county council meeting. “The property is actually owned by the Sussex Academy. I have had several discussions with board members of the academy as well as some of the administrators at the school, and we have a gentleman’s agreement in place right now to locate the sign on their property as long as they would get some real estate on the sign.”

Mr. Lawson presented a conceptual design of the sign proposal to council members.

“Well, I hope it is not going to be one of annoying electronic signs that blinks. It is not going to do that, is it?” asked county councilwoman Joan Deaver, D-Lewes.

“We will have full control of the design …,” said Mr. Lawson.

“But it will be in good taste?” Ms. Deaver asked.

“It will be fully controlled by us. So with any of your recommendations we will be able to monitor and keep the sign under complete control,” Mr. Lawson said.

Ms. Deaver cushioned her comments. “I had to give you a hard time … (with) electronic signs,” she said.

In addition, Mr. Lawson said he has had some preliminary discussions with the Town of Georgetown “because this property is within the Town of Georgetown and would fall under their guidelines.”

“We’ve not submitted anything as it relates to paperwork or application process. After today’s presentation, that would be the next step,” Mr. Lawson said. “We would anticipate the work in the process to begin early next year. I would think we could get to construction assuming we get through some of the hurdles by the spring of ’16 and have that completed potentially in that timeframe.”

In his update, Mr. Lawson said most signage work reflecting the name change from Sussex County Airport to Delaware Coastal Airport has been completed at the airport facility.

The large outdoor sign located outside the Sussex EOC entering the parking lot has been changed, and signs have been changed within the terminal building along with some features within the parking lot, Mr. Lawson said.

The signage renaming project is covered by funding approved by county council in the current fiscal year budget.

Sussex County Council in June of 2015 voted 4-1 in endorsing renaming the county-owned airport – Delaware Coastal Airport.

In supporters’ eyes, the name change from Sussex County Airport will provide more regional exposure – and eliminate identity crisis – in the county’s efforts to boost airport growth, economic development, business and tourism.
