Chick-fil-A to roost in Millsboro’s growing commercial stretch

MILLSBORO – Burger King, McDonald’s and Popeye’s will have some company along DuPont Boulevard in Millsboro in the very near future.

Chick-fil-A, an American fast-food restaurant chain specializing in chicken sandwiches, plans to build a new restaurant at Peninsula Crossing off southbound U.S. 113.

Site work has apparently begun for the restaurant that will be sort of sandwiched between Burger King and McDonald’s. The Popeye’s restaurant sits south of the McDonald’s.

“What I can say is that they will coming very soon according to the company,” said Millsboro Town Manager Sheldon Hudson. “One of the council persons informed me that he noticed what appears to be site work underway where the restaurant will be located.”

Founded 71 years ago, Chick-fil-A has more than 2,000 restaurants in the United States. Because of the Southern Baptist beliefs of its founder, S. Truett Cathy, Chick-fil-A restaurants are closed Sundays as well as Christmas and Thanksgiving.

Plans and hopes for the Millsboro Chick-fil-A have been in the works for some time.

“It has been in the pipeline literally for years now. But as of late things have been heating up,” said Mr. Hudson, noting out of respect for Chick-fil-A corporate he has agreed to keep things under wrap to some degree. “But I can tell you that they have plans to get their building under construction very soon.”

And there’s more business development planned in that commercial stretch of U.S. 113.

“Between the Chick-fil-A and the McDonald’s on the northwest corner … will be the Royal Farms when it comes to town. So, there will be quite a bit of construction along U.S. 113 in the coming months, hopefully,” Mr. Hudson said.

Millsboro town leaders have been proactive in bringing new business to town.

“We get a lot of requests for restaurants. I can tell you the town is definitely working on encouraging sit-down restaurants to come to town,” said Mr. Hudson. “That is something we are actively pursuing for sure.”

This will be the first Chick-fil-A restaurant in inland Sussex County. A restaurant is located on Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach. A Chick-fil-A opened in Milford several years ago.

“We’re obviously pretty psyched about this one,” said Mr. Hudson. “There is a lot of interest out there.”
