Wanted: More community support for Millsboro’s fireworks extravaganza

MILLSBORO –July and America’s independence celebration are just around the corner.

To that patriotic beat, the Greater Millsboro Chamber of Commerce continues to canvass community support to help spark the financial fuse for the chamber-sponsored Stars & Stripes fireworks extravaganza – billed as the only pyrotechnics show in the area Saturday, July 1.

Special edition t-shirt and 50/50 raffle sales continue in support of Millsboro’s Stars & Stripes, a community-oriented fireworks celebration set for Saturday, July 1.

Ongoing sale of special edition Stars & Stripes t-shirts and a mega 50/50 raffle will continue into the July 1 showcase event.

Cupola Park – among the immediate vantage points for fireworks viewing – will be the staging venue for a free, three-hour, family-friendly community event from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. It will feature several food vendors, entertainment by DJ Sky Brady and face-painting by New Dimensions Church.

Shortly after dusk, fireworks will be set off professionally by Brothers Pryo from a pontoon-type barge on Millsboro Pond just north of the SR 24 John J. Williams Highway bridge.

Millsboro chamber is promoting this event as the only fireworks show in the area that evening.

“That was our whole point. Everybody else is having it near the Fourth or in the middle of the week,” said Greater Millsboro Chamber of Commerce President Kevin Turner. “Our hope was to get as many people here as possible; on a weekend at that.”

The estimated cost for the fireworks is about $30,000.

As of June 15, the tote board tally at the entrance to Millsboro’s downtown district had inched up to about $25,000.

“It’s like a tad over $25,000,” said Mr. Turner. “So, we’re really pushing to get these t-shirts sold and 50/50 tickets. They do help. Every little bit does count.”

Commemorative Millsboro Stars & Stripes t-shirts – red, white or blue in several sizes – were made by Logo Motive in Rehoboth Beach.

Shirts are $25 each, which directly supports the fireworks. Shirts sport the logo and “United We Stand … I Support Millsboro Stars & Stripes.”

In another fundraiser, the Millsboro chamber continues its 50/50. Raffle tickets are $1 each. A maximum 5,000 can be sold.

The raffle drawing is around 8:45 p.m. July 1. The winner does not need to be present.

Major sponsors

Major sponsors of the event are the town of Millsboro, which put up $10,000, Mattress Peddlers, Peninsula Dental, Southern Delaware Tourism, Chuck Hall Agent/State Farm and Millsboro Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep.

Rain Date

Sunday, July 2 is the rain date for the fireworks. Should the weekend be a total washout fireworks will be rescheduled later in the summer. Labor Day weekend has been suggested as a possible date, Mr. Turner said.
